DETAILED ITINERARY |
DAY 1: ARRIVE MULU > DEER & LANG CAVE > BATS OBSERVATORY (D)
|
• |
WELCOME TO MULU! |
• |
Upon arrival at the airport, meet and greet with our friendly representative and transfer to Mulu Mariott Resort & Spa. |
• |
In the afternoon, meet the local guide and travel together to Mulu National Park and proceed on a 3km boardwalk to reach Deer Cave and Lang's Cave. Fantastic rainforest, rushing jungle streams, and an old Penan burial cave may all be seen on the walk to the cave. Upon reaching the cave, you will be standing at the entrance of the world's longest cave corridor. Most people who go to Deer Cave also go to Lang's Cave, the entrance to which is just a few yards away. The granite patterns of Lang's Cave make it the most compact of the exhibition caves. |
• |
After exploring the caves, depending on the weather, between 5 and 7 o'clock in the evening, visitors may be treated to the incredible sight of a black cloud of free-tailed bats coming from the cave mouth in quest of food. |
• |
Then, return to your stay and enjoy free time at your own leisure. You may wish to explore the park's several unguided trails! |
• |
Dinner and overnight stay at the resort. |
|
DAY 2: BATU BUNGAN > PENAN SETTLEMENT > WIND & CLEARWATER CAVE (B, L, D)
|
• |
After breakfast at the resort, ride on a longboat and cruise up the Melinau River and visit Penan Longhouse and Market at Batu Bungan. Spend quality time to observe the tribe lifestyle and shop at the local handicraft & arts market in Penan Settlement before continuing your cave visit. |
• |
Next up, continue the journey by a longboat to the Wind Cave, and marvel at the stunning cave formations while feeling the cool air blow through the cave at Cave of the Winds. |
• |
Next up is Clearwater Cave - one of the biggest cave systems in the world, measuring over 220km in length. Be prepared to climb some very high stairs to reach it. Swimming inside the cave is not permitted. However, you can cool down in the crystal-clear waters at the picnic deck. Float with the fish and enjoy the rainforest around you. |
• |
Enjoy a picnic lunch from our local guide at the Clearwater Rest Hut and transfer by longboat to Long Litut. The boat will need to be pushed over the rocks if the water level is too low for it to float. The 9-kilometre trek from Kuala Litut to Base Camp 5 takes around two to three hours and covers reasonably level forest terrain. After a restful night at Base Camp 5, enjoy a hearty meal prepared by your local guide. |
• |
Dinner and overnight stay at Camp 5. |
|
DAY 3: CAMP 5 > GUNUNG API > PINNACLES > CAMP 5 (B, L, D)
|
• |
After breakfast at the base camp, start your hike to Gunung Api (pinnacles viewing point) at approximately six in the morning. From Camp 5 to the Pinnacles lookout, you'll gain around 1,200 metres in elevation while only travelling 2.4 kilometres. The path ascends precipitously into a moss forest after descending through a lowland dipterocarp forest. Little trees remain, and moss grows on almost everything else. The trail is littered with sharp pieces of limestone, so hikers should make sure to always be cautious. |
• |
Due to the difficulty of the trail's final stretch, 15 aluminum ladders and a rope portion have been strategically placed along the path. The ascent is likely to take you four or five hours. |
• |
Packed lunch will be served at the observatory point. After lunch descend back to Camp 5. |
• |
Dinner and overnight stay at Camp 5. |
|
DAY 4: FREE TO EXPLORE MULU AND DEPART (B)
|
• |
After breakfast, free at own leisure to do cycling, fishing, canopy skywalk or explore unguided trails at own expenses until transfer to Mulu Airport for your next destination. |
